60 Years Later

It has been 60 years since Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh were married on November 20th, 1947. The marriage started with a great deal of controversy and media attention. Philip had been born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark but had renounced he claim to the Greek throne. With no financial resources, a Greek Orthodox and two sisters married to Nazi supporters, Philip was considered by many to be an inappropriate choice of spouse for the next Queen of England. The 60 years that followed have no been without crisis and has been under heavy media scrutiny all the way, but the couple have shown remarkable commitment to each other and this week became the first royal couple in history to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.
The couple's 60 years of marriage was celebrated earlier this year with a ceremony in the same church where they were wed in 1947 and where the queen's coronation took place in 1953. Many members of the royal family were in attendance, as were 9 other couples who had also been married on that same day in 1947.
